Some of the most rewarding roads don't have a photographer in every corner or a T-shirt shop at the end. Arkansas Highway 123 is one worth putting on the map for its own reasons—not because anyone needs to prove how fast they can ride it.

Ride this route

Start at the AR-123 junction near Lamar and head north through the Ozark National Forest toward Sand Gap. Continue north toward Mount Judea, then onward toward Western Grove if making a longer ride.

Navigation note: This is a verified road corridor, not a live turn-by-turn route. Confirm intersections and road status in a current navigation app before departure.

What makes this ride special

The route changes personality several times. The southern section runs near Haw Creek Falls Campground; farther north, the road folds around Ozark slopes near Mount Judea, where riders encounter particularly tight switchbacks. Don't treat the full route as one uninterrupted set of curves: the changing terrain is part of the appeal.

Where to stop

Haw Creek Falls Campground on AR-123 is a worthwhile roadside area when accessible; Sam's Throne Recreation Area near Mount Judea offers a scenic detour for those prepared for its access road and short walks.

Where riding skill matters

The famous Mount Judea turns require controlled downhill speed and good sightline discipline. Loose gravel can collect near shoulders and in shaded bends.

Keep your lane position conservative, set a safe entry speed before blind corners, and leave room for unexpected traffic or debris. A good ride ends with the bike and rider in one piece.

Before you leave

Check current highway advisories, weather, fuel availability and seasonal access. Download an offline map for remote areas. Scenic stops and businesses may have seasonal hours; confirm them separately.
