Some of the most rewarding roads don't have a photographer in every corner or a T-shirt shop at the end. U.S. 221 — Little Parkway is one worth putting on the map for its own reasons—not because anyone needs to prove how fast they can ride it.

Ride this route

Start at US-221 and NC-105 in Linville. Follow US-221 north for 18.5 miles to US-321 Business/Main Street in Blowing Rock. This is the officially mapped Little Parkway scenic byway.

Navigation note: This is a verified road corridor, not a live turn-by-turn route. Confirm intersections and road status in a current navigation app before departure.

What makes this ride special

The old Yonahlossee corridor dates to 1889 and once served as a toll road linking Linville with Blowing Rock. It curls beneath Grandfather Mountain through a series of rock-lined bends and wooded stretches. Its proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway doesn't make it an expressway; this older road asks for patience.

Where to stop

Grandfather Mountain is nearby, and the North Carolina scenic byways guide describes a side trip onto the Blue Ridge Parkway toward Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, Price Lake and Linn Cove Viaduct.

Where riding skill matters

North Carolina DOT explicitly says the byway is not recommended for RVs or buses. Motorcyclists should expect tight curves, rock faces and slow traffic.

Keep your lane position conservative, set a safe entry speed before blind corners, and leave room for unexpected traffic or debris. A good ride ends with the bike and rider in one piece.

Before you leave

Check current highway advisories, weather, fuel availability and seasonal access. Download an offline map for remote areas. Scenic stops and businesses may have seasonal hours; confirm them separately.
