Benson Motorcycles in Muncie Closing After 47 Years in Business

Another long-standing motorcycle dealer is preparing to shut its doors. Benson Motorcycles, an authorized Harley-Davidson dealership located at 6410 W. McGalliard Road in Muncie, Indiana, will permanently cease operations on October 31, 2026.

The closure will officially bring an end to 47 years of business in the East Central Indiana market. Founded by Phil Benson, the dealership spent nearly five decades serving the local motorcycling community. To recognize its longtime customers before winding down daily business, the dealership hosted a customer-appreciation gathering on October 10.

According to dealership leadership, shifting retail realities and heavy financial pressures made continuing operations unsustainable. Specifically, ownership pointed to mounting overhead costs, shrinking profit margins, and ongoing competition from online shopping as the core reasons behind the decision to close.

Why Riders Should Care

A legacy dealership closing touches the local riding community directly. For motorcyclists in and around Muncie, Benson Motorcycles has been a central hub for purchasing bikes, buying parts, and getting maintenance work completed. Losing an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer means local owners will have fewer options for factory-certified warranty support, parts availability, and regular servicing.

The closure also mirrors broader economic challenges unfolding across the powersports retail landscape. As digital retailers capture more market share and physical operating expenses climb, legacy storefronts that have anchored regional riding scenes for decades are finding it tougher to stay open.
