Zero DS Sets Guinness World Record With 271-Mile Single-Charge Ride

Electric motorcycle range just hit a major benchmark. Riding a stock Zero DS dual-sport, enthusiast Jelle Verstaen completed a 271.23-mile journey on a single charge, setting an official Guinness World Record for distance traveled without plugging in.

The run started along the French-Italian border and finished down at the Mediterranean coast. Rather than sticking to a flat test track, the route took the machine through Alpine mountain passes, navigating mixed terrain with steep elevation changes, rural towns, and open coastal roads.

Verstaen's ride covered 436.5 kilometers and crushed the previous electric motorcycle record of 193 miles. Adding 78.17 miles to that earlier benchmark represents an increase of more than 40 percent.

The motorcycle used for the run was a production Zero DS equipped with the factory optional 3.6 kWh Power Tank accessory. That add-on brought total onboard battery capacity to 19.2 kWh.

Why Riders Should Care

Range anxiety and highway distance remain the biggest hurdles for American riders considering an electric bike. Many riders still wonder how these machines handle real roads outside of short city commutes.

Covering more than 271 miles across mountain terrain and changing elevations shows genuine battery progress. While aggressive throttle use and sustained interstate cruising will always affect battery life, this run proves what current production hardware can deliver over a full day of riding.

Biker Nation Perspective

Crossing mountain passes for 271 miles on one charge shows that electric touring is steadily moving closer to real-world capability. When a production-based dual-sport with a factory accessory can conquer Alpine roads for that distance, it proves battery technology is addressing the range barrier head-on.
