Your Next Plate Renewal Could Warn You About Open Recalls

Riders across the U.S. could soon get flagged for open recalls every time they renew their bike tags.

On November 5, 2026, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration set up a $1.5 million grant program to help states build systems that alert owners to unrepaired safety defects during registration and renewal transactions. NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison made the announcement at the agency's "Recalls Next: Technological Innovations and Safety Recalls" meeting in Washington, D.C.

Millions of safety recalls on motorcycles and passenger vehicles go unfixed each year. Putting recall alerts straight into state vehicle registration renewals ensures riders find out about critical manufacturer defects before heading out on highway rides.

State agencies have until February 4, 2027, to submit their grant applications to tap into the $1.5 million fund. Would getting a recall notice with your registration paperwork push you to visit the dealer for a fix?
