NHTSA Urges Riders to Check for Open Recalls

If you have not checked your motorcycle for open recalls recently, federal safety officials want you to look right now. You can check your bike in minutes, and any required safety fixes will not cost you a dime.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a nationwide consumer alert asking drivers and riders across the United States to run a recall check as clocks turn back. NHTSA documented 997 safety recall campaigns in 2025 alone. Those campaigns affected more than 29.2 million registered vehicles nationwide, leaving millions of unrepaired safety defects on the road.

Riders can run their 17-character Vehicle Identification Number through the search tool on NHTSA.gov or through the mobile SaferCar application to find any open campaigns. Under federal safety law, manufacturers and franchised dealers are legally obligated to repair safety defects at no cost to the consumer.

Unresolved mechanical or electrical recalls carry severe crash risks on two wheels. You cannot spot most of these issues during a routine pre-ride check without running the motorcycle's VIN. Checking the federal database ensures you get free factory repairs before tucking the bike away for winter storage or taking off on late-season road trips.

Have you checked your bike's VIN for open safety campaigns this year?
