Your State DMV Might Soon Warn You About Open Recalls

Your next registration renewal could come with a direct warning about an open safety recall on your motorcycle.

On November 5, 2026, NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison presented a $1.5 million federal grant program at the agency's Recalls Next summit at U.S. DOT Headquarters in Washington, D.C. The funding helps state motor vehicle agencies across the U.S. detect open recalls and notify owners during registration and renewal. NHTSA is prioritizing states that set up reliable notification processes, measure completed repairs with data-driven methods, and share procedural reports. State agencies have until February 4, 2027, to submit their grant applications.

This effort applies nationwide and tackles a major problem for riders. Serious defects like cracked triple clamps and brake failures pose severe hazards, yet many pre-owned bikes remain on the road with unresolved recalls. NHTSA pointed to pilot programs in Maryland, California, Texas, and Ohio where state DMV notification letters produced remedy rates up to three times higher than notices sent by manufacturers alone. Running automated recall checks through the DMV ensures riders receive an alert before a mechanical failure leads to a crash.
